St. Joseph Regional Health Center Inpatient Oncology Unit
The use of medication in treating cancer was first described in ancient Egyptian papyri almost 7,000 years ago. Today chemotherapy (medical oncology) is a potent weapon in the fight against cancer. It can be used to cure cancer, to slow its growth, keep it from spreading, or even to relieve the symptoms caused by cancer. Recent advances in the knowledge and understanding of the biology in cancer cells have lead to a large increase in anti-cancer drugs available to the medical oncologist.
Frequently, a combination of drugs will be used to treat cancer. Each drug is specifically designed to atack one element of the cancer or to enhance the body's efforts to fight the disease. Occasionally, chemotherapy is used in conjunction with radiation therapy or biotherapy as well. Each disease, and each individual, requires a unique plan that addresses the location of the cancer, the extent of its growth and the general health of the patient.
The oncology unit at St. Joseph Regional Health Center has played a vital role in a patient's fight against cancer. The doctors and nurses, along with the latest equipment, combine to form a team that is able to fight and win the struggle against cancer.
